A Christmas Art Exhibit

Nativity

The word "nativity" derives from the latin word, "nativitas" which means "birth." In Christian tradition "nativity" refers to the birth of Jesus Christ, both the arrival of Jesus and the miraculous circumstances. For centuries people have depicted the Nativity scene in Bethlehem in various forms: from wooden models, to paintings, to theatre dramatizations. The depiction of this scene draws us into the wonder of Christmas. This practice dates back to Francis of Assisi, who created a live action representation of the manger scene in 1223. In the bible story each of the nativity characters goes on a unique journey. What calls and draws them to the manger depends on their role and relationship to Jesus. Each of these journeys gives us a glimpse into the joy of Christmas.

Grace

Arcrylic Painting

This painting is a symbol of kindness and caring, of the newborn that brought us eternal life, and of the Lord's grace for us all. In Jeremiah 8:7 (NIV) it says,

7 Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, […]. But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord.

Jeremiah 8:7 [NIV]

We are reminded how we often wander away from our Lord but just as the stork knows to always return to the same nest every migratory season, so our Lord brought us His Son, to show us the way to Him.

The inspiration came at a night before I sleep. While thinking of the theme of my art work to be, “Oh Little Town of Betheleham” appeared in my mind. The peaceful night with stars which led to the birth of Jesus Christ, our savior. The land and towns where people travelled thousands years ago around Jeruselum, thus Betheleham. This painting has expressed it all.

Light

Arcrylic Painting

I wanted to capture my relationship with Jesus over my life so far and how the story of his birth draws me in. The dark clouds embody the difficulties I faced in the earlier years of my life. The pink clouds are dots of His outpouring of love towards me and the bright white moon — the only element with dimension — is symbolic of his pure goodness and love and how it is the center of my life. My journey continues forward towards the light and freedom.

The birth of Jesus Christ gives me Hope and Faith. With His guidance, I can conquer storms, wind and rain. I am not afraid even though I am in the wilderness alone. The Holy Spirit is my 24/7 comfort.

The pieces answer the question of the song, “What Child is This?” The first verse introduces Jesus as a baby worthy of adoration. He was born to bring light to a dark world. The second verse focuses on Jesus as a king deserving of the best offerings. Yet Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for us. He was a gift to the world that was cradled in a wooden manger as a baby, and later nailed to a wooden cross as our saviour. He gave His life for us and it was the greatest gift of love.

I was inspired by Luke 2:11,

11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Luke 2:11 [NIV]

and wanted to depict an angel presenting this visually. I imagined the angel presenting the miracle to someone who's feeling lost or hurt, telling them the light at the end of the tunnel, their hope, is here.

Decorative Quilt

The softness of this quilt represents the warmth of the Holy Night when baby Jesus was born. The fabrics mixture has laid out this devine and tranquil moment with a genuine simplicity. However, it has not diminished the ultimate celebrative mood of the Nativity. Let us rejoice in this colorful Christmas!

The Light

Arcrylic Painting

This painting is called “The Light” the reason I named this from the inspiration saying “I am the Light of the World” from the “I am”. There are two versions of verses; one in Matthew 5:14-16 and one in John 8:12, both of these verses Jesus said but one of them says “you are the light of the world” and the other says “I am the light of the world”. The one I am inspired by is John 8:12, it says

12 I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

John 8:12 [NIV]

Jesus was born in a setting where not a typical king or child would be born, he was born in a manger in a stable in bethlehem but it was a special birth, a birth that the world would know.

The Christmas story; like we all know revolves around the birth of Jesus Christ. For some, His birth was just like any other, but for us Christians, we see hope and joy in His arrival. Likewise, while capturing these photos, I was particularly drawn to how God presents himself in my everyday life. For other tourists, this scenery was simply an architectural sight, but for me, it was a reminder of his presence in the quiet moments. The birth of Jesus has given us new life and purpose, and as we carry out our everyday routine, I am encouraged during this season to become more vigilant in the ways he makes himself apparent.

Arcrylic Painting

This acrylic painting is a reflection of the night that Jesus came down in human form to share his love with the world. While the sky and state of the world might have been dark, Jesus' birth brought light and hope to creation. All people may come to Him and worship with joyful and grateful hearts.

11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Jesus came as a "raw and minimal" form of an ordinary human…

God is Light… and He glorifies Himself, in His time.

Light, raw and minimal materials were used to configure this piece, to echo the story and this narrative.

“거룩한 밤 별빛이 찬란한데 거룩하신 우리 주 나셨네
오랫동안 죄악에 얾매여서 헤매던 죄인위해 오셨네”

“O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining till He appeared and the soul felt its worth”

We were inspired by the translations of "O Holy Night", and reflected on the rippling impact that this small but powerful moment of Jesus' birth had on all people. On this holy night was born saviour, whose name shall be brought to all corners of the world.

Inspired by the song “O Holy Night,” this piece reflects the feeling of awe and wonder experienced on the night Jesus was humbly brought into the world. As I was listening to the lyrics, I felt compelled to capture the sense of hope and reverence surrounding the birth of Jesus under the brightly shining stars and singing angels on that beautiful, holy night.

Silent Night

Arcrylic Painting

We should stop running around in our pursuit of wealth, comfort, happiness and other things and focus on the most valuable thing brought to us by the birth of Jesus — salvation. Let us listen to Silent Night and spend a calm and peaceful evening thanking God for sending His only Son to the world. May this painting help you make Christ-honoring resolutions.

Stories of the Nativity

Arcrylic Painting

I was reflecting on how familiar the characters in the nativity scene are to us, but that we don't often think about how these characters came to make up this beautiful arrival story. I wanted to touch lightly on those unique stories to evoke curiosity for what's happening behind this scene and celebrate the divine way God weaves us together to bring glory to Him.

Light Of The World Stepping Down Into Darkness

Photograph

The two Bible verses to be contemplated for this piece of artwork are from John 1:5 and John 8:12. The sea represents darkness with the waves we encounter in life. Jesus is the Light of the world stepping down into the darkness and dwelling among us for our salvation and reconciliation with our Heavenly Father. Jesus is the centre of our lives. He is the Light that shines in the darkness, and He can calm the storm. Let's stay focused on Jesus and follow Him!

Digital Art

This digital image is a combination of two photos taken from Lights of Hope display at downtown's St. Paul's Hospital. The stars, the lights and the word hope attracted me. The star reminded me of Jesus' birth. He is the Light of the world and our hope. It is quite difficult to understand why the one true God had chosen to come to earth even though He knew the suffering He would endure, yet that fact is important to all of life.

1 I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

Arcrylic Painting

For tonight, darkness fell into the dawn of love's light - Sing Alleluia! O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

The birth of Jesus Christ marks the start of a chain reaction & prophecies fulfilled. This joy has been captured in the victorious battle between colour & monochrome; life (light) & death (snake), holy power & treacherous power.

This piece is inspired by the lyrics of Michael W. Smith's “All is Well” & 1 Corinthians 15.
