Broken Beauty, Living Promise

Arcrylic Painting

Imagine the holiest of men to walk among us, shattered and splintered on display for those He was sent to save.
Imagine the broken body of the purest man on Earth.
Yet still He spurs us on, not to sit in the waiting, but to live with kindness, in faithfulness and in preparation for the return.
The icon of a broken rose signifies a sacrifice and a promise made.
A promise that survives the body. A promise that reminds us to believe when tomorrow is unclear.

The sermon series this Christmas season is entitled “Keep Watch” inspired by Matthew 24-25 and reading through these passages, the part about the day and hour of Jesus' return being unknown stood out to me. An image of an hourglass came to my mind. The sand in the hour glass is falling to indicate that Jesus is indeed coming back, but there is no clear indication when the time will reach the end. For all we know, the hourglass could just flip around and the sand would still continue falling.

We as His followers must be ready. We cannot slip into a comfortable state, just living life without the knowledge of our Lord and pushing obedience to Him to the side. We are to “keep watch” by living a life that is holy and pleasing to Him alone. What does that life look like?

This advent I am reminded to keep watch as the 5 wise virgins did and to look towards Jesus for my salvation.

Matt 25:13 [NIV]

It's pretty dark out there.
We wait, we watch and we move on.
And, we do know darkness will be over, eventually.
We also know where we’re going…
How about you?

As I read Matthew 24-25, I envisioned rocks along a shoreline. Just as Jesus calls us to stand firm in our faith, these rocks remind me of steadfastness. Though waves crash against them, they remain unmoved. Over time, the rocks may be eroded, but this process only makes them smoother, more beautiful, and even stronger in their foundation.

Anticipation

Arcrylic Painting

This oil painting was started on November 11th, 2024, after my family participated in a Remembrance Day Ceremony. Advent candles help us remember that God keeps His promises.

The first candle (purple) is the Prophecy Candle or Candle of Hope: our hope comes from God. (Romans 15:12-13)

The second candle (purple) is the Bethlehem Candle or the Candle of Preparation: “get ready” to welcome God. (Luke 3:4-6)

The third candle (pink) is the Shepherd Candle or the Candle of Joy: the angels sang a message of joy. (Luke 2:7-15)

The fourth candle (purple) is the Angel Candle or the Candle of Love: the angels announced the good news of a Savior sent by God who loves us. (John 3:16-17)

The fifth candle (white) is the “Christ Candle” representing Jesus as the spotless Lamb of God who was sent towash away our sins. (John 1:29)

The backlit cross in the window frame against a starry night reminds us that Jesus will return as promised.

13 Keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Creation is one of the many ways we can experience God's presence. Like the eagerly waiting person standing on the rock looking beyond the horizon into the distant sea. This Christmas as we cozy up ourselves we not only can focus upon Jesus's first coming but also his second coming.

Watercolour Painting

This watercolor piece displays both the positive and negative elements of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The light that splits both dark and happiness illustrates how God can create joy in the dark and bitterness in our lives, how he gives us hope in grace so that we don't have to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has its own to worry about.

Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. Imagine, what if Judas Iscariot was willing to approach the Cross to ask forgiveness, do you think he would be set-free?

God's grace for us is between our time of “remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19b), so we “repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15b).

Through Jesus we can be forgiven and set free from the bondage of sins: soar high under God's love with a bird's-eye view to survey the landscapes of our hearts that have developed over time, prayerfully reorient our journeys of “let go and let God” (cf. Ephesians 3:20) in which our beings are to be transformed, then our relationship with God and people will be renewed, and our doings will be manifested organically, being filled with the fruit of the Holy Spirit (cf. Galatians 5:22-23)

The Joyful Season of Lent

Acrylic Painting

Lent is our yearly reminder that God is the one preparing the feast, a banquet better than we could ever make ourselves. We are invited through our Lenten observances to focus our thoughts, our appetites, and our hearts on the One who generously pours out “a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing.” (Luke 6:38 NAB). Lent reminds us that the many joys of this world bear no comparison to the joy that we shall find in the resurrection. Throughout the 40 days of Lent, the Church speaks of joy in the liturgy, illustrating via both Scripture and prayer that Christian joy is about anticipating God's presence:

24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24 [ESV]

11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Psalm 16:11 [NLT]

Peter actually said we could rejoice because we had a “lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1: 3 KJV). Our Lenten prayer, fasting, and almsgiving help us remember the merciful love and compassion that God shows all people and prepare us to receive salvation with joy.

Displayed is a Kidz Church Grade 3/4 paper craft prototype from mid February 2019 depicting the Transfiguration of Christ in the form of a Butterfly with a Trinity of Hearts radiating God's Love outward. The scene takes place in a Giant Cloud with the Cross visible within it.

4 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His Glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 [NIV]

After completing the smaller cloud with the children's verse for Sunday school preparation, I prayed for a dream of Heaven, as I was missing my Mom who had passed, and I was carrying a heavy cross myself.

Instead of a dream of Heaven, I dreamt of Jesus on earth. For years I didn't understand the dream. All I remember was that Jesus was everywhere at the same time: in a field, on the childhood street, carrying the cross in a storm, and helping me craft with chocolate hearts.

Matthew 7:7

John 10:14

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Revelations 22:13

Abstract acrylic painting with fish in a red sky, and creatures of many colours on the ground
Abstract acrylic painting with fish in a red sky, and creatures of many colours on the ground

Acrylic Painting

Easter is specially a meaningful time as it commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus, as well as the resurrection. “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Roman 6:4) This drawing has portrayed the stunning moment when our Lord died on the cross. The moment that His life on earth was flashing back. It was a life of legend that was full of God's miracles one by one, and His love to the people is tremendous.

Acrylic Painting

This artwork captures the scenery after the crucifixion of Jesus when Mary went to look at the tomb. When Mary entered the tomb, she encountered an angel who came from heaven and the angel said to Mary “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where He lay” (New International Version, 1978, Matthew 28:5). After Mary encounter with the angel, she was filled with joy and spread this great news to Jesus's disciples.
